Ford Focus Boot Size: Why That 54 cm Aperture Catches Travellers Out

The Ford Focus hatchback has a 375-litre boot — but the 54 cm aperture height is the lowest of any common rental car. A standard medium check-in won't enter upright. Here's what actually fits.

The Ford Focus is one of the most common compact rental cars in Europe. The brochure says 375 litres — a reasonable figure for a C-segment hatchback. What the brochure doesn't say is that the boot aperture height is just 54 cm: the lowest of any common rental car category. A medium check-in suitcase (66 cm tall) physically cannot enter the Focus hatchback upright. Everything goes in on its side. Once you know that, you can plan around it. Here's the honest guide.

Ford Focus Boot Dimensions (Hatchback)

MeasurementFord Focus Hatchback (2018–2023)
Boot volume (seats up)375 litres
Floor width96 cm
Load depth (to rear seats)93 cm
Internal height57 cm
Aperture width (opening)100 cm
Aperture height (opening)54 cm

The numbers tell the story. With 57 cm internal height and a 54 cm aperture, nothing taller than a large laptop bag will enter the boot standing upright. The Focus is a lay-flat-only car. The 96 cm floor width and 93 cm depth are reasonable once bags are flat — but you will not fit a medium check-in upright under any circumstances.

Ford Focus vs Other Common Rental Cars

CarBoot volumeAperture heightVerdict vs Focus
Nissan Qashqai504L68 cmMore space, higher aperture
Renault Kadjar472L66 cmMore space, higher aperture
VW Golf (hatchback)380L58 cmSlightly more space, higher aperture
Toyota Corolla (sedan)370L57 cmSimilar volume, slightly wider aperture
Ford Focus (hatchback)375L54 cm

No common rental hatchback has a lower aperture than the Focus. Even the VW Golf — its closest rival — gives you 58 cm of aperture height, allowing carry-on bags to slide in upright. If luggage access matters on your trip, ask at the counter about a Golf, Qashqai, or Kadjar upgrade.

How Many Bags Fit in a Ford Focus?

  • 2 adults, soft holdalls only: ✅ Good — duffel bags and backpacks squeeze through easily. Comfortable for two.
  • 2 adults, cabin bags only: ✅ Works — cabin bags must go in flat (56 cm height vs 54 cm aperture) but two fit.
  • 2 adults, 1 medium check-in + cabin bags: ⚠️ Possible — the check-in goes flat, cabin bags on top. Very snug.
  • 2 adults, 2 medium check-in bags: ❌ Very tight — both bags must lie flat and there's minimal remaining space.
  • Family of 4 with check-in bags: ❌ Not suitable — 375 litres and a 54 cm aperture cannot accommodate a family's luggage without rear-seat encroachment.

Packing Tips for the Ford Focus

  • Switch to soft bags. The single best thing you can do for a Focus rental is replace rigid hard-shell suitcases with compressible holdalls or duffel bags. They compress through the aperture in any orientation.
  • Think in layers, not rows. With only 57 cm of internal height, you're packing flat — treat the boot like a suitcase and stack items horizontally.
  • Use the rear seats for overflow. The Focus has adequate rear legroom. If you have one extra bag, putting it on the back seat is often the most practical solution.
  • Fold-flat rear seats. The rear seats fold 60/40 to create a load floor extending up to ~155 cm. Travelling solo or as a couple and not needing rear seats? This unlocks space for longer or awkward items.
  • Request an upgrade if you have rigid suitcases. At the rental counter, even a step up to a crossover or small SUV gives you a meaningfully better aperture.

The Ford Focus is a comfortable, economical rental car — and a poor luggage car. Its 54 cm aperture height is the defining constraint: plan for it before you arrive, or plan for a counter upgrade. If you're travelling with rigid check-in bags, a Qashqai or Kadjar in the same price bracket will save you considerable frustration.
