Renault Clio Boot Size: The 51 cm Aperture Nobody Warns You About
The Renault Clio has a 391-litre boot but a 51 cm aperture height — the lowest of any common European rental car. Nothing enters upright. Here's what actually fits.
The Renault Clio is one of the most rented budget cars in Europe — ubiquitous at airports from Lisbon to Prague. It's cheap, it parks easily, and it's surprisingly comfortable inside. What nobody tells you before you arrive at the rental lot is that the boot has a 51 cm aperture height: the lowest of any common European rental car. The Ford Focus at 54 cm is bad. The Clio is worse. Not a single standard suitcase enters this boot upright. Here is the full guide.
Renault Clio Boot Dimensions (Mk5, 2019–2023)
| Measurement | Renault Clio Mk5 |
|---|---|
| Boot volume (seats up) | 391 litres |
| Floor width | 96 cm |
| Load depth (to rear seats) | 92 cm |
| Internal height | 55 cm |
| Aperture width (opening) | 102 cm |
| Aperture height (opening) | 51 cm |
The 51 cm aperture height is the critical number. A cabin bag (56 cm tall) cannot enter upright — it's wider than the opening. A medium check-in (66 cm) has 15 cm too many. Everything loads at an angle or flat. The 55 cm internal height confirms that even once bags are inside, there is no standing space for anything taller than a small backpack.
Does Your Luggage Fit in a Renault Clio?
| Bag type | Fits? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin bag (56×36×23 cm) | ❌ Upright impossible | 56 cm height vs 51 cm aperture. Must load diagonally or on its longest side. |
| Medium check-in (66×46×26 cm) | ❌ Flat only | 66 cm greatly exceeds 51 cm aperture. Loads flat. One fills most of the floor. |
| Large check-in (76×51×28 cm) | ❌ Very difficult | 51 cm wide when laid on its side — exactly at the aperture limit. High risk of not fitting. |
| XL check-in (86×58×33 cm) | ❌ No | Will not fit in any orientation. |
| Soft holdall (60×35×28 cm) | ✅ Best option | Compressible bags are the only sensible solution for the Clio. |
| Backpack (50×35×25 cm) | ✅ Yes | Small soft backpacks fit fine. Rigid packs may be borderline. |
Renault Clio vs Other Budget European Rentals
| Car | Boot volume | Aperture height | Verdict vs Clio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dacia Duster | 478L | 72 cm | Much more space, far better aperture |
| Nissan Qashqai | 504L | 68 cm | More space, higher aperture |
| VW Golf | 381L | 57 cm | Similar volume, better aperture |
| Ford Focus | 375L | 54 cm | Similar volume, slightly better aperture |
| Renault Clio | 391L | 51 cm | — |
Every car in this comparison has a better aperture than the Clio. Even the Ford Focus — itself one of the most aperture-constrained common rentals — gives you 3 more centimetres. At the rental desk, even a step up to a VW Golf or Dacia Duster transforms the loading experience significantly.
How Many Bags Fit in a Renault Clio?
- Solo traveller, soft holdall only: ✅ Fine — one compressible bag loads easily.
- 2 adults, soft holdalls: ✅ Works — two duffel bags fit in the 391 L with room for jackets.
- 2 adults, cabin bags: ⚠️ Awkward — cabin bags must load diagonally. Two fit but it's uncomfortable loading.
- 2 adults, 1 medium check-in + cabin bag: ⚠️ Possible — the check-in goes flat and takes most of the floor. The cabin bag sits on top.
- 2 adults, 2 medium check-in bags: ❌ Very difficult — both bags must lie flat and there's almost no remaining space.
- Family of 4: ❌ Not viable — the Clio is a two-bag car at best.
Packing Tips for the Renault Clio
- Only bring soft bags. This is not negotiable for the Clio. Rigid hard-shell suitcases will cause serious problems at the aperture. Duffel bags and soft holdalls are the only sensible choice.
- Use the rear seats. The Clio has usable rear legroom. One passenger's bag on the rear seat floor is often the most practical plan for two-person travel.
- Request an upgrade at the desk. The jump from a Clio to a Golf or Duster is often €5–10/day and the aperture difference is enormous. If you have any rigid luggage, ask.
- Fold the rear seats for longer or odd-shaped items. The 60/40 split fold extends the load floor significantly for soft bags and equipment.
The Renault Clio is a delight to drive around European cities — tight parking, low fuel costs, easy to manoeuvre. It is a very poor luggage car. If you are travelling with anything more than one soft bag each, ask for a different car at the counter. The 51 cm aperture is a hard physical limit that no amount of clever packing can overcome.
