Ford Kuga Boot Size: How Much Luggage Fits? (+ PHEV Warning)

The Ford Kuga has a 475-litre boot — but the PHEV variant drops to 411 L. Critical difference for families. Full luggage guide with real dimensions.

The Ford Kuga is a common rental SUV across the UK and Europe, and the 3rd generation (2020+) is a significant improvement on its predecessor. There is, however, one critical booking trap: the PHEV (plug-in hybrid) Kuga has a 411-litre boot, not 475 litres. The battery pack sits underneath the boot floor and removes the underfloor compartment — and 64 litres of loading space with it. Rental companies routinely mix both variants on the same booking class.

This guide covers the standard (non-PHEV) 3rd generation Kuga (CX482, 2020+) as the primary reference, with PHEV differences called out clearly.

Ford Kuga vs Competitor Boot Sizes

CarBoot volumeOpening heightInternal heightNote
Ford Kuga (standard, 3rd gen)475 L76 cm83 cmGood height, modest volume
Ford Kuga PHEV411 L76 cm74 cmBattery raises floor significantly
VW Tiguan (Mk2)615 L68 cm72 cmMore volume, worse height
Toyota RAV4 (XA50)580 L80 cm87 cmBetter in every dimension
Peugeot 3008520 L73 cm78 cmMore volume, worse height than Kuga

The standard Kuga's 83 cm internal height is genuinely impressive — one of the best in its class alongside the Kia Sportage (82 cm). The PHEV variant, however, drops to 74 cm, which puts it behind the VW Tiguan for usable upright height. Confirming your variant before you travel is not optional if you have large cases.

How Many Suitcases Fit in a Ford Kuga?

  • 2 passengers (standard): 2× large check-in standing upright + 2× carry-on stacked. Comfortable.
  • 4 passengers (standard): 4× medium check-in standing, or 2× large + 2× cabin bags. The 83 cm height makes stacking easy.
  • 4 passengers (PHEV): 4× medium check-in flat, or 2× medium standing + 2× carry-on. The raised floor limits options significantly.

Kuga Packing Tips

  • Check for the charge port before loading. The PHEV has a charging socket on the front left wing. If it is there, your boot floor is raised — replan your loading order immediately.
  • Standard: use the height advantage. The 83 cm internal height lets you stack a carry-on on top of a large check-in standing upright — maximising the load without laying anything flat.
  • The 76 cm aperture is tight for large cases. 75 cm large check-ins have just 1 cm of clearance. Approach squarely and lift slightly over the lip — do not rush it.
  • Standard model has a useful underfloor well. Shoes, cables, and compact valuables sit neatly below the boot floor without taking up load space.

Should You Request a Specific Kuga Variant?

If your rental company allows variant preference, always request the standard petrol or mild hybrid (mHEV) Kuga. The PHEV is quieter in town and better for the environment, but the 64 L boot penalty is real and affects every trip with full-size luggage. If the company cannot guarantee the variant, consider requesting a Toyota RAV4 instead — 580 L and an 80 cm aperture with no hybrid boot penalty.

Check Your Exact Bags Against the Kuga

Standard vs PHEV is the critical variable for the Kuga. Confirm your variant and run your exact bag measurements before you travel.
