5 Rental Cars That Look Big But Have Surprisingly Small Boots
These rental cars look spacious from the outside but have seriously restrictive boot dimensions. The Toyota Camry, BMW 3 Series sedan, VW T-Roc, and others regularly catch travellers off guard at the counter.
Boot space is not proportional to exterior size. Some of the most common rental cars in the world have dimensions that frustrate travellers who assumed a big car meant a big boot. Here are five of the most common offenders — with exact numbers so you know what you're getting.
1. Toyota Camry — 493L but a 52 cm Aperture Height
The Camry is a long, wide, premium-looking sedan. Its 493L boot sounds generous. The catch: the sedan's aperture height is just 52 cm — meaning even a standard carry-on bag (56 cm) must enter on its side. Nothing stands upright inside either (55 cm internal height). The volume is real but almost entirely inaccessible in the way most travellers expect to use it. Full Camry guide →
2. BMW 3 Series Sedan — 480L and a 52 cm Aperture
The BMW 3 Series sedan has the same aperture problem as the Camry. 480L of volume, but the narrow sedan lid opening restricts everything to loading flat. The 3 Series Touring estate (500L, 83 cm aperture) eliminates this completely — if you need a BMW and have large luggage, specifically request the Touring. Full BMW 3 Series guide →
3. VW T-Roc — 445L but Only 64 cm Internal Height
The T-Roc looks like a proper compact SUV with genuine cargo credentials. Its 64 cm internal height is the lowest in the class — lower than the Golf hatchback (67 cm). Nothing taller than a medium check-in stands upright. The sloping roofline that makes it look sporty is directly responsible. The Skoda Karoq on the same platform has 67 cm internal height and 76 cm more volume. Full T-Roc guide →
4. Citroën C3 — 300L Total
The C3 is the smallest boot of any car commonly available in rental fleets. 300L, 86 cm wide, 53 cm deep, 68 cm tall. One medium check-in fills it. If you arrive at a rental counter expecting a compact city car to hold two large bags, you will be disappointed. Book the C3 only when you are travelling light — cabin bag and a personal item. 5. Kia Sorento 7-Seat (3rd Row Up) — 147L
The Sorento in 5-seat configuration has the largest boot of any common rental SUV: 813L. But if the rental company hands you a Sorento with the third row raised, the boot collapses to just 147L — less than a Ford Fiesta. The 7-seat trap is severe in the Sorento because the third-row seat folds into the boot floor rather than the ceiling. Always check which configuration you're in before you load. Full Sorento guide →
The Pattern
All five share a common cause: either a sedan/coupe roofline that restricts aperture height, or a design compromise (sport styling, third-row seating) that eats into usable boot space. The number to always check before booking is aperture height — not total litres. A car with 400L and an 80 cm aperture is more useful for standard luggage than one with 500L and a 52 cm opening.
