Nissan Qashqai Boot Size: How Much Luggage Actually Fits?
The Nissan Qashqai J12 (2021+) has a 504-litre boot — but the 68 cm aperture height is the tightest of any popular rental SUV. Full luggage guide before you book.
The Nissan Qashqai is Europe's best-selling compact SUV and appears in rental fleets across the UK, EU, and Australia constantly. The 3rd generation (J12, 2021+) is a smart, well-equipped car — but its 68 cm boot aperture height is the tightest of any SUV in the compact class. That single number decides whether your luggage slides in cleanly or causes a frustrating scene at the rental lot.
This guide is specific to the J12 (2021+). If you were allocated the previous J11 (2014–2021), boot volume is smaller at approximately 430 L with the same aperture constraint.
Nissan Qashqai Boot Dimensions (J12, 2021+)
| Measurement | cm | inches |
|---|---|---|
| Boot volume | 504 L | — |
| Floor width | 102 cm | 40 in |
| Boot depth | 88 cm | 35 in |
| Internal height | 75 cm | 30 in |
| Opening width | 104 cm | 41 in |
| Opening height (aperture) | 68 cm ⚠ | 27 in |
| Lip height | ~5 cm | 2 in |
e-Power (hybrid) Qashqai variants may have a slightly reduced boot floor due to battery packaging. Confirm with your rental company.
Which Luggage Fits in the Nissan Qashqai?
| Bag type | Dimensions | Fits? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carry-on | 55×40×23 cm | ✓ Yes | Fits easily. Multiple side by side. |
| Large cabin bag | 56×45×25 cm | ✓ Yes | No issues — well within the 68 cm aperture. |
| Medium check-in | 67×47×29 cm | ⚠ Tight tilt needed | 67 cm bag vs 68 cm aperture — 1 cm clearance only. Must be loaded carefully at the right angle. Inside, the 75 cm height lets it stand upright. |
| Large check-in | 75×52×32 cm | ⚠ Must lay flat | 75 cm case cannot pass through the 68 cm aperture upright. Must be laid on its side to load, then cannot stand upright inside (75 cm case = 75 cm internal height). |
| XL check-in | 80×55×35 cm | ✗ Lay flat only | Cannot enter upright. Must be loaded flat. Two XL cases will not fit side by side on the 102 cm floor unless one is on top of the other. |
| Golf bag | 120×35×35 cm | ✗ Rear seat must fold | Does not fit with all seats up. Fold the 60/40 rear seat to create a 1.8 m load floor. |
Qashqai vs Competitor Boot Sizes
| Car | Boot volume | Opening height | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Qashqai (J12) | 504 L | 68 cm | Tightest aperture in class |
| Kia Sportage (5th gen) | 591 L | 75 cm | 87 L more space, much taller aperture |
| Toyota RAV4 (XA50) | 580 L | 80 cm | Best aperture of any rental SUV |
| Honda CR-V (5th gen) | 522 L | 72 cm | Tighter than Sportage, better than Qashqai |
| Peugeot 3008 | 520 L | 73 cm | Common European alternative |
| VW Tiguan (Mk2) | 615 L | 68 cm | Same aperture constraint, more volume |
The Qashqai shares the Tiguan's 68 cm aperture — the tightest of any popular rental SUV — but with 111 L less boot volume. If you are offered a Qashqai and travelling with large check-in bags, request an upgrade to a Kia Sportage (75 cm aperture, 591 L) or a Hyundai Tucson (616 L). Both are a meaningful step up.
How Many Suitcases Fit in a Nissan Qashqai?
- 2 passengers, carry-on only: Easy. Multiple bags fit with room to spare.
- 2 passengers, medium check-in: Both fit, but load carefully — the 1 cm clearance on the aperture requires a clean angle.
- 4 passengers, medium check-in: 3–4 medium cases laying flat on the 102 cm floor. Stacking is needed.
- 4 passengers, large check-in: Challenging. Two large cases laid flat side by side nearly fill the boot width (52+52 = 104 cm on a 102 cm floor). Third and fourth cases will not fit without folding a rear seat.
Qashqai Packing Tips
- Know the 68 cm rule before you pack. Any suitcase taller than 68 cm must be loaded on its side. That means a 75 cm large check-in goes in flat — plan your packing order around this.
- Load medium check-in cases at a 45° angle. The 1 cm clearance on the aperture is genuinely tight. Approach at a slight angle rather than straight-on to avoid snagging the frame.
- Use soft bags for the Qashqai. If you can choose your luggage, soft-sided bags compress through tight apertures far more easily than hard-shell cases.
- Fold one rear seat for large loads. The 60/40 split gives you a significantly extended floor — use the narrower 40% section to keep three passengers seated while sliding a golf bag or ski bag alongside.
- e-Power models: check the underfloor. The Qashqai's underfloor storage compartment may be reduced or absent in the hybrid variant due to the 12V battery.
Should You Request a Different Car?
If you are travelling with large check-in luggage (75 cm+), the Qashqai will cause frustration at the lot. The aperture is genuinely restrictive for anything above a medium check-in case. At the rental counter, ask for a Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, or Toyota RAV4 — all have meaningfully taller openings and more boot volume in the same booking class.
Check Your Exact Bags Against the Qashqai
Boot dimensions vary between J11 and J12 generations, and between petrol and e-Power variants. Rental companies sometimes allocate either generation on the same booking. Run your exact bag measurements on BootFit before you arrive at the lot.
